Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year is the most popular celebration of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is not only celebrated in Mainland China but also observed in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore and many other Asian countries. In recent years, the celebration has spread from Chinatowns into New York City, London, Vancouver, and Sydney.  The 2019 Chinese New Year is February 4 – 19 and marks the start of The Year of the Pig!

No matter where they are, people try their best to return home for a large family reunion. Most employees have a week (or more) off from work and students have one month of winter vacation.  The Chinese New Year is celebrated with red decorations, lanterns, feasts and, of course, fireworks.

As an essential part of Chinese folk culture, fireworks have a history of more than 2,000 years. Among all traditional festivals and holidays, firecracker use is the most massive during the Chinese New Year. Fireworks are meant to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new, and many believe they bring good luck and happiness.
